Bristol alt-rock trio Mutant-Thoughts return with their new single Summer Storm (The Whimsical Machine).

Intricate melodic pop with a psychedelic edge, the song interplays between light and darker motifs - with whimsical synth arpeggios making way for a brooding drop to an eventual soaring chorus.

It’s a song about our need for change - and how oppressive and stagnant moods can give way to a sense of elation and hopefulness.

Hook-laden, oblique and tinged with subtle irony, Summer Storm (The Whimsical Machine) is Mutant-Thoughts’ sanguine look at the modern human condition.

A band who thrive by drawing on complex and often disparate themes and genres, Mutant-Thoughts (Han on synths, Josh (bass) and Paolo (drums)) give their take on the song and it’s origins…

[Josh] ‘I was curious about this sense of restlessness I would often get. A feeling that I was most uncomfortable when nothing was moving or changing around me. I think it is a very common, human emotion that drives us to act. It made me think of the stillness in the air before a storm - hence the title’

[Han] ‘’The Whimsical Machine’ is us. It’s being moved by our whims and desires despite thinking we are in control. For me this gives the song a sense of irony. The song’s light and dark sections represent the discrepancies between how we feel and behave and the balance we need to achieve between them to lead a more purposeful life.’
